The first in a series of three events was held in Alton, Illinois. The event consisted of a performance by The Theater School at DePaul University, and a panel discussion of local community leaders. The event was held at the Hatheway Cultural Center at the Lewis and Clark Community College. The second event was held in Springfield at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The third and final performance will be held May 4 in Chicago at the Feinberg Theater.
Event Synopsis
From 1897 to 1908, Scott Bibb, an African American firefighter, resisted the newly imposed segregation of the Alton school system. He won all five appeals at the Illinois Supreme Court but lost the larger issue as the Alton schools remained segregated for nearly fifty years after the cases.
